Frequently Asked Question — Physicians

How can you help me and my patients?

I can spend the time that you don't have with your patients who need it. If you don't have an hour-and-a-half to spend with a patient whose blood glucose falls in the "impaired glucose tolerance" range, I do. I can not only describe, in lay terms, the pathophysiology of what is occurring in your patient's body, the natural progression of the process, and how certain lifestyle modifications can alter or delay that progression, but I can also take the time to figure out how to help your patient work exercise into her day, and can accompany her to the supermarket and show her what to put in her cart to maximize her health.

When you have a patient whose biopsy comes back positive for cancer, I have the time to sit with that patient and his family, describe, in layman's terms, the practical implications of his specific diagnosis, research current protocols, prognosis, and where promising trials are being conducted, discuss in detail with your patient and his family what his personal goals are regarding this diagnosis, seek out expert second (or subsequent) opinions, facilitate appointments, and provide emotional support.

I help teach your patients so that they are best able to work with you as a partner in their own healthcare, best able to use appointment times efficiently, and best able to communicate with you.

Frequently Thought-But-Not-Asked-Out-Loud Question

Will you steal my patients?

No. I take on clients, not patients, and I make that clear to my clients. I do not prescribe medications nor do I order tests. I do not make official diagnoses. Because of my medical background and training, I may at times suspect a specific diagnosis or think a specific test or treatment may be beneficial, and I advise my clients to discuss these issues with their own doctors (or, at my client's request, I discuss these issues directly with my client's own doctors). My goal is to help my clients optimize their relationships with their own doctors. When my client is frustrated with his doctor, I help him pinpoint his frustrations, understand physicians' frameworks/viewpoints, and improve his communication strategies.
